<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2013 is shaping up to be the year of the Gothic Revival. And I, for one, couldn't be happier. I have always been drawn to the Gothic stories of the 19th century: <i>Frankenstein</i>, <i>Wuthering Heights</i>, <i>The Fall of the House of Usher</i>, and of course, <i>Jane Eyre</i>. While Gothics are known for their extremes in drama--overwrought heroines, Byronic heroes, turbulent weather, eerie settings--they also have a psychological complexity that makes them more than just high-brow horror. Unlike pure horror stories, the thrills and chills in a Gothic tale usually serve as a vehicle for the protagonist's transformation, which often comes at a cost. <i>Jane Eyre</i> excepted, not one of the above novels ends happily. These stories teach that knowledge comes at a price, and that there's a thin line between passion and madness. Like dystopians (another hot genre right now), Gothic novels reveal our deepest fears. But unlike dystopians which exploit fears very much based in our reality (economic collapse, environmental catastrophe, totalitarian takeover), the Gothic novel taps into more primal fears: ghosts, madmen, hell hounds, things that go bump in the night. *shivers* </div>

<strong>Here’s my Q&A about the sequel to A Breath of Eyre, A Touch of Scarlet, releasing March 26, 2013:</strong><br />
<br />
<table border="0"><tbody>
<tr><td><a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=a+breath+of+eyre&x=0&y=0"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbtiy_xfKSoBJlGmaHb-dJEseqjOsX9uyAnkK48hsmYlqKzb5jtJFQaUN-ZqqCntv91N3k7oQ7k7iCy44J-SyXHg2MWN4Iyzd1IIbZ6_1flW1WN1XH5Hbn3xLcOd2vwRokO_TT2-QzcGQ/s200/A+breath+of+Eyre.jpg" /></a></td><td width="150"><br /></td>

</tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<strong>1 What is the working title of your book?</strong><br />
A Touch of Scarlet, as the book is inspired by The Scarlet Letter.<br />
<br />
<strong>2 Where did the idea come from for the book?</strong><br />
Did you ever have a book you hated in high school, but then you read it again as an adult and were like, “Wow, this book is amazing; I just didn’t appreciate it when I was sixteen.” That’s what happened to me with The Scarlet Letter. After I wrote A Breath of Eyre, in which my character gets lost in the novel Jane Eyre, I was looking for other classic novels to inspire Books 2 and 3. For the sequel, I needed to send Emma into a book that would put her through the wringer, so to speak. The Scarlet Letter deals with identity, power, guilt, hypocrisy, sexuality—many of the issues teens face in high school—so it seemed like the perfect catalyst to force Emma out of her comfort zone. <br />
<br />
<strong>3 What genre does your book fall under?</strong><br />
Not an easy question, but I guess I’d say contemporary with a touch of paranormal.<br />
<br />
<strong>4 Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?</strong><br />
Even though I don’t usually imagine actors while I’m drafting, these casting choices wouldn’t ruin my day:<br />

<strong>5 What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?</strong><br />
A girl with the ability to slip into the books she’s reading finds truth and fiction merging through the pages of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic, The Scarlet Letter.<br />
<br />
<strong>6 Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?</strong><br />
I am represented by April Eberhardt Literary, and the book is being published by Kensington Books.<br />
<br />
<strong>7 How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?</strong><br />
For some reason, the sequel took much longer to write than Book 1. From start to finish, it probably took me a year and a half to write, although I was teaching full-time as well.<br />
<br />
<strong>8 What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?</strong><br />
Maybe other books inspired by classic literature, like Kelly Creagh’s Nevermore, Lesley Livingston’s Wondrous Strange, or Kathryn Burak’s Emily’s Dress and Other Missing Things.<br />
<br />
<strong>9 Who or what inspired you to write this book?</strong><br />
I am always inspired by my students, who manage to navigate some treacherous waters with grace and resilience.<br />
<br />
<strong>10 What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?</strong><br />
I think A Touch of Scarlet might appeal to readers who love gothic novels, New England settings, romance, family dynamics, classic literature, and themes of identity and coming of age.<br />
<br />
Now I’m going to tag the following wonderful writers: <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.acgaughen.com/">A.C. Gaughen</a><br />
<a href="http://www.writertherestless.blogspot.com/">Sarah Perry</a><br />
<a href="http://www.tiffanyschmidt.com/blog/">Tiffany Schmidt</a><br />
<a href="http://www.wolftalez.blogspot.com/">Jennifer Shaw Wolf</a><br />

But <em>A Touch of Scarlet</em> releases six months from now, and I find myself wishing it were out now. If this book had a season, it would be fall. The story begins where <em>A Breath of Eyre </em>left off, with Emma starting her junior year at Lockwood Prep. But everything is changing—the leaves on the trees, her relationships, and most important, Emma herself. Feeling lonely and restless, Emma begins to run in the woods behind her school—sometimes in an attempt to evade her fears, other times in search of something that seems to be calling to her. As the ghosts of the forest draw her in, she comes face to face with the characters from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s <em>The Scarlet Letter</em>. And if she’s brave enough to face them, they might just have a lesson or two to teach her. Here’s the gorgeous autumnal cover!<br />
<br />

<br />
To those who have already read A BREATH OF EYRE, you’ve probably seen the cover in miniature on the back flap of the book, but it looks so much lusher in full size! While ARCs won’t be available for several months, the book is available for <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Touch-Scarlet-Eve-Marie-Mont/dp/0758269498/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1349778503&sr=8-3&keywords=a+touch+of+scarlet">pre-order</a>. You can also add it to your <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15814202-a-touch-of-scarlet">Goodreads</a> list. To celebrate the cover reveal, I am giving away a prize package that includes:<br />

<div>
<br />
For most fiction writers, creating stories is a passion, something they would do whether or not they had any hope of being published. In fact, when I reflect on my writing life so far, it’s those years before I was published—when I was striving for truth, daydreaming about characters, building story arcs, experimenting with language—that were the most exciting and rewarding for me. And I think it’s because that time truly belonged to me. It was my choice whether to spend an hour of the day writing or seven. My choice to try my hand at contemporary or magical realism, women’s fiction or young adult. It felt like I was in a giant sandbox of imagination playing with dozens of toys. And best of all, no one was watching.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Now that I’m published and contracted, those toys have become tools, and that sandbox has become a workshop, one with glass windows through which any number of people can peer in and pass judgment. And my time no longer belongs to me. Now I’m in the business of creating a product, and people are waiting on the sidelines to judge what I’ve created. Somewhere along the line, I stopped playing because of those eyes on me, because of the voices seeping through the windows telling me that what I was making looked wonky and strange, that it was neither functional nor beautiful.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
And then those voices became so loud that I stopped listening to the most important voice of all—my own—the one that was trying to tell its next story.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
So how do I find my voice again when all those other voices are shouting at me? How do I find the joy in writing when it feels like a job? How do I get myself back into the sandbox?</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
A writer friend of mine gave me a great sports analogy that has helped me immensely. She said that when she's playing tennis, occasionally the ball hits her racket so soundly that she can feel the impact of it in her bones. That satisfying feeling travels all through her body, telling her she's made perfect contact, that she's hit the “sweet spot.”</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
When I told her how I'd been feeling lately, she reminded me that when you’re writing freely and tapping into that reservoir of imagination and possibility, you can find that “sweet spot”in writing too, that place where you know instinctively that you've hit on a truth, made a connection, done something well. If you can somehow immerse yourself in the game and play like no one's watching, then the words will come pouring forth and it will feel like magic. Like joy. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuvhTA5qtAB3rjolBP4lioKdv0NeKfVjCPQ4gsguxpQNz6WULxy8pB8TeWvMWMWWvMnqbaIXri-RKDhCbMaBYyEBSe3HVKIy8niogHYWtAtXFB6fwF7ckduMWuo_nXVVbzsPp0Ng3JfZc/s1600/launch10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuvhTA5qtAB3rjolBP4lioKdv0NeKfVjCPQ4gsguxpQNz6WULxy8pB8TeWvMWMWWvMnqbaIXri-RKDhCbMaBYyEBSe3HVKIy8niogHYWtAtXFB6fwF7ckduMWuo_nXVVbzsPp0Ng3JfZc/s320/launch10.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a>So you’ve written a book and snagged an agent who sold your book to a publisher who helped you revise and copyedit and promote, and now three years later, you have an actual book in the world! Most people might assume that after this long roller coaster of a journey, the writer can finally breathe a sigh of relief and just coast. But in my experience, this is just the beginning of another roller coaster, much shorter in length but with the same amount of ups and downs--the post-launch.<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
The first “up” in my post-launch rollercoaster was my launch party held at The Doylestown Bookshop last Saturday. I debated whether to have a launch party at all—I’m not one for being the center of attention—but I would encourage anyone with a debut coming out to have one, if only to remind yourself that you have accomplished something that the rest of the world sees as kind of awesome. It was so wonderful to have friends, family, and even some of my students come out to support me, to chat and sign, eat scones and drink wine, and basically just celebrate with the people I love. Major, major high point! A huge thank you to all who ventured out on that rainy day to help me celebrate; it was amazing!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisxsOUCxItan8U9VOrWvR2FcM9R9aWfJETGDmnJ9xpRvugDF8Rc83q_Zn5Ty-SXkFiA6TjhNaNbjQfngDYKiJ_bfOVbAqYteyE7MOgdYOT2EBdxdFWCVaByuR4ehjveWBZwhS4JzkLxiM/s1600/launch28.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisxsOUCxItan8U9VOrWvR2FcM9R9aWfJETGDmnJ9xpRvugDF8Rc83q_Zn5Ty-SXkFiA6TjhNaNbjQfngDYKiJ_bfOVbAqYteyE7MOgdYOT2EBdxdFWCVaByuR4ehjveWBZwhS4JzkLxiM/s320/launch28.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And now for the “lows.” I’m sure there are many writers who navigated this post-launch terrain with more perspective and maturity than I did, but I also know I am not alone in becoming a dysfunctional mess of a human being during the first week after my launch. It wasn’t helped by the fact that I was on spring break; if I’d been teaching I would have had more distractions. But right after my book released, my world suddenly became very small, a bubble of minutiae that no one else really cares or knows about but that can become all consuming for the writer.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I’m talking about the internet, of course. Every morning I would hop on the computer to see if my Amazon ranking had gone down or if my Goodreads ratings had gone up (and then cry when I realized the opposite had happened). I obsessed about sales and reviews and blog comments, hoping that my little book was thriving out there but knowing that, for the first time in this entire process, I couldn’t do a single thing about it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXWbxDCDbaK8euumYndgHjWop9Yx6HCmWIHhMkx3jme1bA_3LIcQUeMH21kufDkt6Gij4BqjaSNlfFmL3yyIC4lsueaWbURf_LCs2UYuYiDgJIHU6ZvllBv4yC2Fd4qvpNwQKRSGeNHs8/s1600/writing+stress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXWbxDCDbaK8euumYndgHjWop9Yx6HCmWIHhMkx3jme1bA_3LIcQUeMH21kufDkt6Gij4BqjaSNlfFmL3yyIC4lsueaWbURf_LCs2UYuYiDgJIHU6ZvllBv4yC2Fd4qvpNwQKRSGeNHs8/s320/writing+stress.jpg" height="309" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Because once a book releases, it’s no longer yours. Unlike the end of a pregnancy when a woman gives birth and has an actual baby to take care of, a book is immediately out of your hands, for better or for worse, and the only thing the writer can do is wish it well and get started on the next project.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I am happy to say that now, two weeks after my release, I have returned to the land of the living. This past weekend I threw myself into revisions on Book 2, and today I head back to school. Normal life has resumed.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
And I know that a year from now, I’ll be going through this roller coaster all over again. But next time I’ll be armed with this knowledge and experience, no longer a green “debut author” but a seasoned writer who will have learned not to fret about things beyond her control. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself…</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Has anyone else had a less-than-relaxing post-launch experience? Any tips on how to avoid the madness?</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">From <a href="https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/eve-marie-mont/breath-eyre/" target="_blank">Kirkus Reviews</a>:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A BREATH OF EYRE [STARRED REVIEW] </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Author: Mont, Eve Marie</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This richly satisfying tale of first and last love transcends its genre—not another breathless, fan-fiction take on a literary classic but an intertextual love letter.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Raised by a distant father and ex-debutante stepmother, shy, bookish Emma misses the mother she barely remembers. At Emma’s 16th birthday party, her mother’s college roommate, Simona, gives her a copy of Jane Eyre. Emma finds Simona’s son, Gray, disturbingly attractive, but he dates an A-list girl at Lockwood, the boarding school Emma, a scholarship student, attends. The alliance she forges with her new roommate—fellow scholarship student and Haitian science whiz Michelle—heartens both until, struck by lightning, Emma wakes up to find herself Jane Eyre. Though her world is comforting at first, Mr. Rochester’s controlling ways trouble Emma, who feels deepening compassion for Bertha Mason. (Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea is clearly a referent here.) She fights her way home, but unresolved issues and mysteries, especially the connection between Jane’s world and Emma’s mother, draw her back. With evocative settings and compassionately drawn characters, this trilogy opener offers affectionate insight into the gifts literature gives readers. If treasured books have the power to change us, it’s a two-way street. As we change, so does our relationship to those books and so, in a sense, we change them.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A smart and rewarding ode to literature. (Fantasy. 12 & up)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">And from <a href="http://www.publishersweekly.com/978-0-7582-6948-5" target="_blank">Publishers Weekly</a>:</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Adult author Mont’s (Free to a Good Home) enjoyable YA
debut, first in a planned series based on classic literature, introduces
16-year-old Emma Townsend, a student at the elite Lockwood Prep. At school,
Emma and her roommate are taunted for being scholarship students, and she has a
crush on her English teacher as well as a confusing friendship with Gray, a
reformed bad boy. When Emma is struck by lightning and wakes up in the novel
Jane Eyre as the governess herself, the memories of her life at Lockwood soon
fade as she falls in love with the dashing Mr. Rochester, “two lost souls
trapped in a gloomy mansion together—one haunted by a past he could not
relinquish, the other haunted by a past she could not remember.” Emma senses
that she has unfinished business in both worlds (in which characters cleverly
mirror each other), and she travels between them to discover truths about her
past and future. Brontë fans should appreciate this romantic, time-slipping
reimagining that addresses finding a voice in writing and in life. Ages 14–up.

<br />
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;">No, it's not
another giveaway. *cue disappointed faces* This is the post where I confess how
absolutely terrified I am that my book is coming out in 33 days. People might
read it. Or they might not. They might like it. Or they might not. Right now,
it's all in front of me--this big abstract MOMENT I've built up in my mind
which could turn out to be anything from abysmally disappointing to supremely
lovely to anywhere in between.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;">The strange
thing is, as the release day ticks ever closer, instead of wanting to publicize
and promote and pimp like crazy, more than ever I want to hide from the
world--just hibernate in a comfy cell with no internet connection and emerge
some time in May after it's all over. I'm an introvert at heart--always have
been. Anything remotely resembling a spotlight sends me into "fight or
flight" mode, and right now I'm a major flight risk.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;">But I know I
can't go anywhere. I have a release date set. A launch party planned. Yes,
family and friends and colleagues are coming out to cheer me on at a real live
bookstore. There will be food! And a reading! And a signing! The stuff of my
adolescent dreams! And while I am endlessly grateful for this opportunity and
for the support of friends and loved ones, I am also still that little girl who
cried when she got one question wrong on her Kindergarten achievement test.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;">Yes, I'm a
perfectionist. A people pleaser. I want you to like me. I want you to like my
words. The thought of my little book going out into the big scary world
sometimes paralyzes me. And yet, this is why I took my manuscript out of the
drawer one day and sent it away to agents. Because I wanted to be a writer
then, and I still do. All introversion aside, I want to connect with people,
and this is the best way I know how.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;">So on March 31,
as much as I might want to hop the next flight to Mazatlan and not come back
until I'm fluent in Spanish, I'll be at the <a href="http://www.doylestownbookshop.com/event/eve-marie-mont-book-release-signing">Doylestown
Bookshop</a> signing copies of my book. If you live in the area, I'd love to
see you there. And I'll try real hard not to throw up on your shoes.</span><br />Eve Morascohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13956167989687576743noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3326833897140029911.post-8492386073268502792012-02-21T05:53:00.000-05:002012-02-21T05:53:20.595-05:00A Breath of Eyre ARC & swag winnersThanks so much to everyone who entered my giveaway for 2 signed ARCs and swag for <i>A Breath of Eyre</i>! <i>A Breath of Eyre</i> is six weeks from its release day, so I thought
this would be an excellent time for another ARC giveaway (I'm giving away 2 signed ARCs with swag!) plus
a teaser excerpt. As many of you know, <i>A
Breath of Eyre</i> is about a girl who gets lost, literally, in her favorite
novel, <i>Jane Eyre</i>. Emma is a sucker for storybook romance, so much so that she fails to see the possibilities for love in her own world. </div>
<div class="MsoBodyTextIndent" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoBodyTextIndent" style="text-indent: 0in;">
I’m also sharing an exclusive teaser from <i>A Breath of Eyre</i> in which Emma may or may not be ready for a little real world romance. All you have to do to
enter is read the teaser below and then, in the comments section, predict what's going to happen next. Plus,
you'll get:</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I never liked Valentine’s Day. Well, that’s not entirely
true. When I was in grade school, we used to have these fun parties where every
student would write a Valentine’s Day card for every other kid in the
class. Then we’d put all our cards inside a special Valentine’s Day mailbox,
and our teacher would play postman, showering us all with shallow yet sweet
messages of love, often with animal themes like: “Owl be your Valentine” or “Bee
mine” or “You’re Purr-fect!”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
That’s what I liked about Valentine’s Day back then—it was so inclusive.
Everyone got a Valentine. Everyone felt loved.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But then I got to high school, and there was no longer a
teacher to make sure our expressions of love were democratized. During
homeroom, the popular girls would be deluged with multicolored roses from not
only their boyfriends but from all the guys who wished they were their
boyfriends. And me? I got nothing. Zip. Zilch. Nada. (Except the year my best
friend and I decided to send each other a rose so we’d feel less like losers.
It didn’t help.)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So basically I’ve hated Valentine’s Day ever since it
started feeling like a holiday meant only for the beautiful and the popular.
Valentine’s Day made me feel unworthy, unlovable, like I’d never be able to
partake in the festivities of flowers, chocolates and candle-lit dinners in the
way my more socially savvy peers did. Valentine’s Day seemed like a holiday for the few, and my exclusion from it left scars.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now that I’m happily married, it shouldn’t matter anymore. In fact, my
husband and I have boycotted Valentine’s Day since we first started dating. And
despite not receiving a pink card or a heart-shaped box of chocolate every
February 14, I know that I am deeply loved. I know that I am married to the man I love. And I know that this is because I’m
free to love whomever I choose. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But just like in my high school days, I can’t help feeling
that this privilege of loving is still doled out unfairly. I usually don’t blog
about political topics, choosing to focus on oh-so-important matters like <i>Doctor Who</i>, swoony love interests from YA
fiction, or shameless acts of self-promotion. But California’s Proposition 8
was just ruled unconstitutional, a major victory for marriage equality. And yet
our country still has a long way to go. Yes, our country, which was founded on the
principle of equality and which prides itself on its diversity and tolerance,
has only six states that allow same sex marriage. We will never be a truly
enlightened nation until we grant all our citizens the right to love, <i>and to marry</i>, any person they choose,
regardless of sexual orientation. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And just because I love her, here is Ellen Degeneres
addressing critics who think she shouldn’t be a spokesperson for J.C. Penney
because she’s gay. In her inimitable warm and witty style, Ellen captures
what’s at the heart of this issue in the last thirty seconds: “Here are the
values I stand for. I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion,
treating people the way you'd want to be treated and helping those in need. To
me, those are traditional values. That's what I stand for.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I couldn’t have said it better myself. </div>

It is absolutely terrifying to think of people actually reading this book to which I’ve given so much of my heart, time, and sweat. But I hope people fall in love with Emma, Gray, Michelle, and Owen as I have and enjoy spending time lost in the world of <i>Jane Eyre</i>. And I really hope people love the characters enough to pick up the sequel, <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12002309-a-touch-of-scarlet">A TOUCH OF SCARLET</a>, which I have finally finished in draft form! While I had outlined the sequel for my editor this summer, this second book kept surprising me and taking me down unexpected paths, particularly as Emma travels into <i>The Scarlet Letter</i> this time—lots of secrets and scandal! Emma grows up so much in this book, and the relationships developed in A BREATH OF EYRE just get more complicated and meaningful. If the series sounds like your cup of tea, I’d love it if you would consider adding the books to your <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12267739-a-breath-of-eyre">Goodreads</a> list. </span><br />

</style> <span style="font-size: small;">This is a Top 5 list I did for The Nightstand blog, but seeing as it’s almost the end of the year, I thought I’d repost it here. </span><span style="font-size: small;">This </span><span style="font-size: small;">was an exciting year for YA, full of controversy, innovation, and reinvention. Angels and mermaids charged into the paranormal fray, contemporaries made their mark in the wake of Stephanie Perkins's delightful Anna and Lola, and dystopians of all shapes and sizes took the literary world by storm. Here are my stand-out choices for 2011:</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />

</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">What a wonderful end to a wonderful trilogy. It took me a while to warm up to Belly and her agonizing love triangle, but by the third book, I was completely caught up in the angst, the dizzying romance, and the pitch-perfect voice of this entire series. I was sad to see summer end.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />

</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Oh, Sophie, you make me laugh, and your potential suitors make me swoon. Hawkins manipulated my emotions so masterfully that I’m completely torn between Archer and Cal—the true sign of a well-executed love triangle. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><i>Unearthly</i> really threw me. I was growing tired of paranormals with their impossibly beautiful love interests, and then came <i>Unearthly</i> with a completely new angel mythology wrapped up in an engaging contemporary package. Clara seemed so real to me, flawed and lovable, and the Wyoming setting was so original and grounded that the paranormal elements never stretched credibility. And then there's Tucker. Where have all the cowboys gone? Wyoming, apparently. An excellent start to a new series.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />

</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">This book was probably THE phenomenon of 2011. And it totally lived up to the hype. Compulsively readable, complex, and full of wicked twists and turns, this was a dystopian with bite. I loved that Tris was no Mary Sue; she’s feisty, proud, and stubborn with a pretty big chip on her shoulder. But she's also brave and selfless. And Four—what to say about Four? Strong, sexy, and brooding, he makes Tris earn his respect. Possibly my favorite love interest of 2011.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />

</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Beautifully written, haunting, and original, <i>Daughter of Smoke and Bone</i> blew me away. While the higher fantasy of the last section lost me a little, for most of the book, I was completely swept up in Taylor’s prose and in the world she created. The lush descriptions of Prague had me itching to wander medieval streets and linger in dark cafes. The Marrakesh scenes are so vivid I could practically taste the dust in my mouth. And the forbidden romance between Karou and Akiva is full of such crackling tension and aching sweetness you don't want the book to end. Simply gorgeous writing and brilliant storytelling.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">Lately I've been thinking about what makes certain fictional couples so memorable. Is it the chemistry they have together? The snappy dialogue? The meaningful looks? Or is it the obstacles they must overcome on the way to love? There are some movies I can watch over and over again and certain books I've read dozens of time primarily because they contain a magical and timeless romance. Here are 5 of my all-time favorite fictional couples and their most memorable scenes:</div><div class="MsoNormal"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGslXS9_JWM0vJAV8NZ4b2b8rkGSg-sVQmpZ2C5vSd_a55r0h40PvMimXtuOHeeeHtqhrV9GESJKzk63slrNlvoD1ZWZ-K8KzfTeWd-_aR06KIA8f0kR4FR3FoAsdHo7Jx1-QTi6vT0JY/s1600/casablanca-bogart-bergman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="163" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGslXS9_JWM0vJAV8NZ4b2b8rkGSg-sVQmpZ2C5vSd_a55r0h40PvMimXtuOHeeeHtqhrV9GESJKzk63slrNlvoD1ZWZ-K8KzfTeWd-_aR06KIA8f0kR4FR3FoAsdHo7Jx1-QTi6vT0JY/s200/casablanca-bogart-bergman.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal">5. Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund (<i>Casablanca</i>)</div><div class="MsoNormal">I love the sense of history and sacrifice in this romance, the acknowledgment that there’s something bigger at stake than two people. So often, love is portrayed in melodramatic fashion—two lovers who would do anything, risk anything to be together. Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><span>“At Paris Fashion Week last month for so many of the Spring/Summer 2012 shows, designers, from Christian Dior to John Galliano, filled the runways with looks seemingly inspired by ‘Wuthering Heights’ and the classic Gothic novel. Though Heathcliff was nowhere to be found, there was certainly a statement made with sweeping black gowns in lace and chiffon. Paired with a loose updo, chandelier earrings, and a bold red lip surely added finishing touches to this look.”<span class="apple-style-span"> (<i>Alexandra Morales</i>)</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="apple-style-span"><span>As I browsed through the photos from the spring preview, many of the fashions seemed to be a hybrid of romantic, flowy silhouettes with sleeker, geometric designs, sort of <i>Wuthering Heights</i> meets <i>The Matrix</i>. This got me thinking about popular culture, particularly about how new trends are often formed at the intersection of old ones. </span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_ueBp4d4J5aSejV1QntpPJ3l8JPj7_LARx3sBeizH1bxRhHIaxO9zL5ii1cgyCt6dSComIbH1r4_Lv_Ve-Xu2Zwf6vYOv9WpIxLve6pU4Lpu4X1NgHoWJDT2YOzjtrh71Y9avJ6v7HtE/s1600/crazy+gothic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_ueBp4d4J5aSejV1QntpPJ3l8JPj7_LARx3sBeizH1bxRhHIaxO9zL5ii1cgyCt6dSComIbH1r4_Lv_Ve-Xu2Zwf6vYOv9WpIxLve6pU4Lpu4X1NgHoWJDT2YOzjtrh71Y9avJ6v7HtE/s200/crazy+gothic.jpg" width="126" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="apple-style-span"><span>Even though I am rarely on the cutting edge of anything, trends fascinate me. They give credence to the Jung’s theory of the “collective subconscious,” the idea that we are all subtly influenced by broad archetypes that give shape and substance to our lives. We can’t help but be swayed by the myriad influences around us, and we are constantly absorbing them, adapting them, and reconstituting them into different forms in our never-ending pursuit of the new. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

Does anyone find it odd that two different TV networks are touting brand new shows that feature darkly spun fairy tales? (<i>Once Upon a Time</i> on ABC and <i>Grimm</i> on NBC.) Or how about the dozen or so young adult books released this year in which ancient myths collide with contemporary settings? My YA retelling of <i>Jane Eyre</i> releases in April 2012, about a year after April Lindner’s <i>Jane</i> and the Cary Fukanaga movie version made their mark, and a few months before Tina Connolly’s <i>Ironskin</i> (a steampunk <i>Jane Eyre</i> with fairies) takes the world by storm. 2012 will also see the publication of April Lindner’s <i>Catherine</i>, a retelling of <i>Wuthering Heights</i>, as well as Andrea Arnold’s interpretation of <i>Wuthering Heights</i> for the big screen, rumored to be even darker and grittier than the book.
